The New 2010 Tolkien Cake is...

Smaug!
Smaug, Dragon Cake
Well of course it is, what with the Hobbit movie on the way what else could it have been! And let me tell you it was not an easy task. A lot of money was spent with the internal structure, that is surrounded by lemon cake, white chocolate ganache, modeling chocolate, and fondant, so you can imaging that this is one heavy cake. The wings are copper tubes that was welded together to achieve the shape and then covered in modeling chocolate. The membrane is a mixture of fondant, modeling chocolate & gum paste. And both sides are connected to PVC connector which was part of the internal structure.

Once everything was covered in white fondant it was airbrushed, because there was no way on earth I was going to be kneading red food coloring in all that fondant, I did end up having to bleach my kitchen floor, cabinets and counters tops, because when your sleepy you forget about stuff like how far overspray travels.
Everyone had red feet, which then proceeded to spread to my living room carpet.
Fun! here he is with Bilbo with Sting!

We even added the jewels to show off his almost fully protected chest.
We then remembered last minute we used the wrong Bilbo, he is suppose to have THE ONE RING on while stealing the golden cup, so we had to add a pic of that too!

It took 4 days to complete Smaug, lots of new tools, lots of edible and non-edible stuff and very little sleep, and believe me, I am sleep deprived right now, but it was well worth it.
Now we look to next year's Tolkien tribute, the mouth of Sauron maybe?
